[Review] Ichiban Boshi Great World City's new look...

The Great World City outlet of Japanese chain Ichiban Boshi earlier this month emerged from a short period of renovation to unveil a brand new look, along with a timely makeover of its menu that was beginning to look a bit tired.

We checked out the revamped menu.

Ichiban Boshi has been a stalwart tenant at Great World City, having been there as long as we can remember. In fact it was always packed to the gills when it first opened many years back - which explains the need for a makeover - and we’re glad to report the crowd was still there when we visited.

So much so that many of its specials were already sold out. In celebration of its reopening, Ichiban Boshi at Great World City had introduced a number of limited specials to its menu, such as the Aurora Salmon Gozen ($29.90, main picture), which was a steal at that price. The all-salmon meal set features udon with salmon in soup, grilled salmon with mentaiko sauce, salmon sashimi served in yukke (a spicy Korean-style sauce with sesame oil), as well as assorted salmon-based sushi, a treat for those who love their salmon. Even better, the Norwegian Aurora salmon - named for the Aurora Borealis, better known as the “Northern Lights” - used for this course is supposed to have grown a lot slower than other salmon (about 2-3 months slower), which gives its flesh better texture and flavour.

But they had run out of the salmon, which meant that the gozen set wasn’t available, as was the Tokusen Kaisen Don ($20.90, above), which uses the same salmon.

The promotion for the Aurora Salmon Gozen runs till end September, though, so we may just pop by for a repeat visit to catch the special.

But that doesn’t really matter when you’re in a place with a true-blue izakaya style menu, which has over 200 items to choose from. Every Ichiban Boshi has a specialty section which is distinctly different from the others, and for the Great World City outlet it’s a grilled seafood-focused “Sakana”, or fish, menu.

The Ayu Shioyaki ($14.90) sees the ayu (アユ) sweetfish grilled simply with salt, which enhances its sweet flesh without over-complicating its flavour.

Also in the Sakana menu is the Kaki Houba Yaki ($10.90), featuring oysters basted with butter and dengaku miso and grilled over a houba (Japanese magnolia) leaf. The unusually sweet sauce pairs exceedingly well with the salty creaminess of oysters, and is rather different way to eat these bivalves.

But for those who crave sushi, the Tokusen Aburi Sushii ($19.90) is a very safe bet where a variety of sushi with assorted toppings is lovingly seared with a blowtorch to provide a slightly charred flavour. It’s a favourite of the mothership, who almost always orders this whenever she visits the Parkway Parade outlet.

And if you’re a fan of sake, try the house (white label) Ichiban Boshi Sake ($18.90 for 300ml), a medium-dry sake (+1 on the sake sweetness scale, for those of you who are into these things) that goes perfectly with grilled fish items.

Based on its flavour profile and bottle though, we’re guessing it could be the Honjozo Yamadanishiki by the Hakushika sake brewery of Hogo Prefecture. But we may be wrong.

The good news is that the adjoining Kuriya Japanese Mart has also revamped, so if you still need your Japanese food fix - or if you don’t have the time to dine in at Ichiban Boshi - you can easily find more Japanese delicacies to take home (or the office) to eat at your own leisure.

And assuming the hordes have not swiped them clean of Aurora salmon, Kuriya Japanese Mart is offering special deals on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays till 28 September for Yuzu Tsuke Salmon ($6.50), Sasa Oshizushi ($4.90), Toro Taku Sushi ($10.90), and Chirashi Cup ($9.90), all takeaway items featuring the Aurora salmon.

You can find Kuriya Japanese Market and Ichiban Boshi at #B1-07, Great World City, 1 Kim Seng Promenade.
